MOUNTAIN BIKE CARE

So you took that shiny new bike into the woods. It was a muddy nasty day but you went anyway. Now it is time to assess the damage and get that pony ready for next weekend. The following procedure will guide you through cleaning and adjusting your bike, however we assume that you have the experience and tools necessary to do the job. Frankly most riders leave the Adjusting to us and do the Cleaning and Inspecting in between rides.

You’ll Need: Chain Lube, Spray Lube, Lightweight grease, Large stiff bristle brush,

Small stiff bristle brush, Screwdrivers, Allen wrenches, Flat File, Torx wrenches

Chain Tool, Cassette Lockring Tool, Chain wear indicator

I. Clean Bicycle

A. Using a stiff bristle brush, knock dirt off

1. Frame

2. Wheels

3. Tires

4. V-brakes

5. Front & Rear Derailleurs

6. Pedals

7. Chain

8. Cassette,

B. Clean Rim surface and V-brake pads, or Disc Rotors with a rag & rubbing alcohol

C. Gently clean fork seals and stanchion tubes with rubbing alcohol

D. Clean Chain (Choose Method)

1. Bike specific degreaser and a small scrub brush

2. Hot, soapy water and a brush

3. Remove chain and soak in degreaser and scrub

II. Inspect Components

A. Remove Wheels inspect for:

1. Bearing play and wear

2. Damaged spokes

3. Rim damage

4. Tire damage

B. Brakes inspect for:

1. Pad wear & Alignment

2. Cable or housing damage

3. Fluid leaks on hydraulic systems

C. Crank and Bearing Assembly inspect for:

1. Bearing Play and wear

2. Chainring damage

D. Suspension Fork / Headset inspect for:

1. Play between Fork lowers and upper tubes

2. Leaking fluids

3. Play between fork and frame

E. Rear Suspension Linkage: Inspect for Bearing/Bushing play

F. Measure Chain for wear

 

III. Adjust & Lube

A. Wheels:

1. Adjust Bearings

2. True Wheels

3. Torque Cassette Lockring

B. V-Brakes:

1. Gently file pads, remove debris

2. Align pads with rim surface

3. Clean & lube inner wire

C. Chain

1. Lube generously with condition specific lube

2. Wipe off excess lube with a rag.

D. Derailleurs:

1. Lube jockey wheels & pivots

2. Clean & Lube inner wires

E. Other:

1. Lube pedal/cleat assembly

2. Remove seatpost, clean, lube if recommended, reinstall
