There are some accessories that are simply necessary. We call these   THE ESSENTIALS

Helmets are a wise choice for anyone that rides a bicycle and are required by state law for those less than 16 years of age. New helmet designs feature lightweight foam, integrated roll cages and exceptional venting. With this level of comfort you will forget that you have it on. Now there is no excuse for not wearing one. Well… There’s always "helmet hair".

Eyewear is also an essential piece of safety gear. Everyone knows that long sunny days spent outside expose your eyes and skin to dangerous rays. Cyclist have the added concern being struck in the eye by bugs, road debris or tree branches. Performance eyewear is very lightweight and offers impact and UV protection. Get in the habit of always wearing eye protection and sunscreen.

Gloves are another popular safety item. Their padded palms help prevent compression of the ulnar nerve which can result in numbness that some cyclists experience during long rides. They also offer protection to the hands in case of an unexpected dismount. Gloves are available in short and full finger models, and in women’s and children’s sizes.

Staying hydrated before and during physical activity is critical to performing at your very best and staying healthy. For cyclists that means water bottles mounted on the bike or a hydration backpack to provide aqua during any ride greater than an hour in duration. Cyclists would also do well to follow the 8 glasses of water a day rule.

Unfortunately, bicycles still go missing. And while stopping the determined thief is still nearly impossible, an inexpensive Bike Lock can prevent the opportunistic thief from ruining your day. Don't forget to lock the wheels as well as the frame.

Though you may not plan on riding at night, Bike Lights are a wise purchase if your rides take place in the waning daylight of fall or on foggy spring mornings. New LED designs have much greater battery life and create a light that is extremely bright and the newer rechargeable halogen lights are bright enough to ride off-road at night.

Bike specific tools allow the cyclist to make minor repairs at home or on the road such as flat tire repair; saddle adjustment; derailleur adjustment; chain repair; etc. An on-the-bike kit would include: allen wrenches; a chain tool; tire levers; spare tube and a small pump.
